I Prayed have prayed
Lord, we thank You for the miracles aboard flight 1073. Continue to protect Your chosen people and bring an end to jihadist terror.
Reading Time: 6 minutes

A routine flight from Dubai to Israel became a nightmare in the sky. But when the story is examined closely, an extraordinary chain of timing, courage, prayer, and providence emerges.

What happened aboard Flydubai Flight 1073 on September 30 could easily have become one of the worst aviation disasters in recent memory.

Visit your state page to pray.

Instead, everyone survived.

The Boeing 737 MAX was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv when, according to Israeli officials and passenger accounts, the copilot violently attacked Captain Smit Machchhar inside the cockpit and sent the aircraft into a terrifying descent.

Flight data showed the plane dropping thousands of feet in a matter of moments. Israeli officials say the copilot apparently intended to crash the aircraft. The precise motive remains under investigation, although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said investigators had found signs of Islamist radicalization.

That investigation needs to continue.

But there is another story emerging from Flight 1073.

It is the story of all the things that went right.

When you begin putting them together, one after another, the survival of those aboard becomes remarkable.

A Trip to the Bathroom at Exactly the Right Moment

Before most passengers realized anything was wrong, Tali Manes happened to be taking her young daughter to the bathroom near the front of the aircraft.

As they approached the area near the cockpit, Manes heard strange noises coming from behind the cockpit door. Then she heard knocking from inside.

Something didn’t seem right.

She alerted a nearby flight attendant.

When she felt that he was not reacting urgently enough, she persisted, insisting that something was happening behind the door.

The attendant went to investigate.

When the cockpit was opened, Manes saw blood and a violent struggle underway. She immediately began shouting for help, warning passengers that the pilot was being attacked.

Consider the timing.

Had her daughter needed the bathroom five minutes earlier—or five minutes later—the unfolding attack might have remained hidden longer. Had Manes dismissed the noises as normal aircraft sounds, precious seconds might have been lost.

Instead, an ordinary moment involving a mother and her child placed someone in precisely the right place to recognize that something was terribly wrong.

Sometimes the first evidence of God’s protection looks remarkably ordinary.

A Gravely Wounded Captain Still Opened the Door

Inside the cockpit, Captain Machchhar was fighting for his life.

According to accounts of the attack, even after being seriously wounded, Machchhar managed to activate the cockpit-door release.

That single action was critical.

Modern cockpit doors are designed specifically to keep unauthorized people out. Had the door remained secured, the passengers and crew might have been unable to intervene.

Instead, the wounded captain managed to give them access.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu praised Machchhar for resisting his attacker despite his wounds and enabling others to enter the cockpit. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi likewise praised the captain’s courage.

One wounded man remained conscious and determined just long enough to open a door.

Everything that happened next depended upon it.

Passengers Ran Toward the Danger

Once Manes raised the alarm, passengers moved.

Tzvika Manes, Yaniv Hayoun, Asaf Rajuan, and others rushed toward the cockpit and helped overpower the attacker.

They had no time to assemble a plan. They were husbands, fathers, travelers, and ordinary passengers, suddenly confronted with an extraordinary decision: run away from the danger, or toward it.

They ran toward it.

Accounts from those aboard describe an intense struggle as passengers attempted to restrain the copilot while the aircraft plunged. Corded airline headphones were reportedly used to help tie him down.

Courage became part of the deliverance.

A Plumber Who Watched Aviation Programs

Then came one of the most extraordinary details of the entire incident.

Yaniv Hayoun is a plumber.

He is not an airline pilot.

But as the plane descended, Hayoun found himself inside the cockpit.

He grabbed the flight controls and pulled back.

Why did he know to do that?

Hayoun later explained that he had watched the television program Air Crash Investigation. Something he had learned while watching stories about aviation disasters suddenly became useful in an actual aviation disaster.

He helped bring the nose of the aircraft upward until trained crew members could take over.

Think about that.

How many times do we acquire some seemingly random piece of knowledge without any idea why it may someday matter? Hayoun could never have imagined that something he saw on television might one day help save his family and scores of other passengers aboard a falling commercial aircraft.

Yet when the moment arrived, he knew what to do.

Trained Pilots Were Already Among the Passengers

Stopping the descent wasn’t enough.

The captain was critically injured. The copilot had reportedly caused the emergency. Someone still had to fly the airplane.

And additional trained pilots happened to be aboard.

Reports indicate that reserve or off-duty pilots traveling on the flight were able to take over once the attacker was subdued and ultimately helped bring the damaged aircraft safely into Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Had those pilots not been on that particular flight, the passengers might have successfully stopped the attacker, yet still faced an aircraft they could not safely operate.

But the people needed for the next stage of the crisis were already there.

And There Was a Medical Professional

Captain Machchhar had suffered serious injuries and substantial blood loss.

He needed immediate medical attention.

And aboard Flight 1073 was Dr. Shota Musaev, a dentist.

Musaev rushed to help the wounded captain, working to stabilize him as the crisis continued around them. He later described Machchhar as having lost substantial blood and said he feared they could lose him if treatment were delayed.

Once again, the person needed for the moment happened to be aboard.

An aviation crisis needed pilots. They were there. A critically wounded man needed medical help. A medical professional was there. A violent attacker needed to be subdued. Passengers willing to risk their lives were there. And the first warning that something was wrong came because a mother happened to take her young daughter to the bathroom.

The Airplane Itself Survived the Descent

The aircraft had undergone an extreme loss of altitude.

Aviation experts told reporters they were surprised the airplane remained structurally intact after such violent aerodynamic forces. Former airline pilot and aviation safety expert Steve Arroyo said he was amazed the aircraft did not come apart.

But it remained airborne.

There was enough altitude left to recover. The controls remained usable. The pilots were able to redirect the plane. And there was an airport within reach.

Flight 1073 landed safely in Saudi Arabia.

Prayer in the Middle of the Crisis

There is another element that should not be overlooked.

Passengers prayed.

In moments when people believed they might be facing death, they cried out to God.

That doesn’t diminish the courage of those who acted. It helps us understand the full picture.

Scripture never presents prayer and action as opposites.

Nehemiah prayed—and stationed guards. David trusted God—and picked up the stone. Esther fasted—and then walked into the king’s presence.

Sometimes God’s answer to prayer comes through supernatural intervention. Sometimes it comes through courageous people, accumulated knowledge, trained professionals, split-second decisions, and seemingly mundane circumstances suddenly converging at precisely the right moment.

And sometimes we may never know the prayers that were prayed before the crisis even began.

The Miracle Was a Chain

It is easy to focus on one hero, but the story of Flight 1073 is bigger than one person.

A mother taking her daughter to the bathroom happened to be near the cockpit when something sounded wrong, and she persisted until the crew responded. A badly wounded captain still managed to open the cockpit door. Passengers found the courage to rush forward and overpower the attacker. A plumber remembered enough from aviation programs to help pull the aircraft out of its descent until trained pilots could take over. Those pilots happened to be aboard, as did a medical professional who could immediately help the injured captain.

At the same time, the damaged aircraft remained controllable, an airport was within reach, and passengers were praying through the crisis.

Any one of those details is remarkable. Taken together, they form an extraordinary picture of timing, courage, preparation, and providence.

Tali Manes herself described the survival of those aboard as a “great miracle.”

For intercessors, perhaps that is the deepest lesson of this story.

We often pray without seeing how God may already be arranging the answer. We do not know who He is positioning, what knowledge He may have prepared in advance, which person will notice what others miss, or who will have the courage to act when the moment comes.

Sometimes deliverance does not arrive through one dramatic event. Sometimes it unfolds through a series of ordinary people and circumstances that suddenly come together at exactly the right time.

Psalm 107 describes people caught in mortal danger who cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distress.

Flight 1073 is a powerful reminder that God’s answers may already be taking shape before we even recognize how desperately we need them.

How You Can Pray

Pray for the complete recovery of Captain Smit Machchhar and for healing from trauma for every passenger and crew member aboard Flight 1073.

Pray that investigators uncover the complete truth surrounding the attack and that any security failures are identified and corrected.

Pray for protection over Israel and over travelers who may be targeted because of their nationality or faith.

And give thanks to God for the lives spared aboard this flight—for the courage of those who acted, for those who were positioned where they were needed, and for what appears to be an extraordinary chain of providential protection.

“Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.” — Psalm 107:28

Our Heavenly Father. Praise God and Hallelujah for all the answered prayers
for Flight 1073. God and all his Heavenly Angels were on this flight and the Holy
Spirit was speaking to all the people who were involved in the Miracle of Miracles.
Thank you for the Mother that sensed something was wrong in the cockpit, thank you
that they could get the cockpit door open and help the Captain who was stabbed by the
Co-Pilot and how everyone rushed to help the Captain and subdue the Co-Pilot. Please let
there be justice served for what the Co-Pilot did as a hostage situation that could have
really gone bad.

Thank you for the plumber who brought the plane out of a nose dive that could have
been deadly for everyone and all the other crew members who came to their assistance.
There were many people who were crying out to God and praying to him and I cannot
believe how everything was orchestrated by God for them to actually land the plane and for
everyone to come out healthy and happy to be alive.

I especially pray for the Pilot that he will be healed both physically and mentally. Thank
you for watching out for this Flight 1073 and everyone that was on it. They could easily
make a movie out of this and honor all the heroes of this Flight.

God is on the move.

In Jesus Name,
Amen and Amen.

One of the most extrordinary stories I’ve ever read and God Almighty knew everything in advance and people were placed according to God’s timing and the needs. Thank God for all who acted and responded and may God bless their lives and may God be glorified.
I also pray the security problem is discovered and changed accordingly.

God never ceases to amaze us. We do not have the words to adequately describe how powerful, merciful, loving, and wonderful He truly is. I am praying for the full recovery of Captain Machchhar, that each person aboard is awakened with a deeper, abiding faith in God, who put all these events in order. His mercies are new each and every morning. I pray that everyone aboard is more convinced of His faithfulness than ever before. I pray that everyone aboard gives thanks to God every day and continues to spread the word. What a mighty God we serve!

I receive newsletters from Maoz Israel, a Christian organization in Israel for decades, consisting of Messianic Jews and Arab Christians.
The email I received yesterday contained the details in this article, but also shared the humor going around on social media:
When you fly don’t request a window seat or an aisle seat, ask to be seated next to an Israeli (acknowledging the divine protection they were given in that flight).

The night before the incident occurred, I was having trouble sleeping – one of my cats kept waking me up, etc. Finally I asked the Lord if there was something he wanted me to pray about,. He said to pray for Israel including the Israeli people, so I did, feeling led mostly to pray for their protection. In the morning when I saw the news report of this attempted hijacking of the Flydubai plane, I knew why He told me to pay for Israel and the Israeli people! I encourage you all to seek the Lord when you can’t sleep at night. He may have something to tell you, or something critical for you to intercede about! And I believe we all need to step up our intercession for Israel and the Jewish people. Thank you, Dave, for this excellent testimony of how God moved! Praise the Lord! And thank you for including the 21 Days of Prayer for Israel Prayer Guide, that we can all join in together to pray!

I pray for our country every night at 8:00 p.m. CST.
During the correspondent dinner, when there was a shooter in the arena, I was praying at the exact same time that the event was playing out.
We never know how God is using our prayer.
I felt like God was calling my youngest son for full time service. (he was our Youth Pastor at the time)
I asked God to prepare he, & his wife for service. A couple of months later, our church called him to become our Pastor.

This is a wonderful article and I am grateful beyond words at how God orchestrated things and used people to keep this from becoming a horrific tragedy.

And for me personally, I found these 2 sentences a powerful reminder — sometimes it’s easy to freeze up as a believer–to cry out to the Lord but not take action and this was the reminder I needed:

“Scripture never presents prayer and action as opposites. Nehemiah prayed—and stationed guards. David trusted God—and picked up the stone. Esther fasted—and then walked into the king’s presence.”

Heavenly Father, thank you for the ways you work in our lives — sometimes in ways that we can see, and sometimes you are saving us from things we don’t even understand. Thank you for how you worked all things together to save the people on this flight. We pray for this pilot’s complete healing, and healing for all involved from the trauma they experienced. And Lord I pray that we would understand that we are to be your hands and feet in the world — we are to pray, but with prayer comes action. May we continually be in your service. In Jesus’ name, Amen
